Mecca from Space: Before and After its Tragic Crane Collapse

This video of Mecca, captured in the summer of 2015 by UrtheCast’s Iris camera, is centred around the city’s Grand Mosque. It’s here where millions of people congregate for September’s hajj pilgrimage, widely known as the largest annual gathering of people on the planet.

Compare this video to the image below, captured by UrtheCast’s Deimos-2 satellite on September 17, 2015, which shows a collapsed crane after it crashed into the Grand Mosque, killing over 100 people. More than 200 people were injured in the accident, which occurred on September 11, 2015.
